Well, you know how this works. A new blockbuster movie, a new movie tie-in mobile game. It's been this way since the 8bit age, and nothing points to a change in this regard. However, in the last years we have seen a little turn in the strategy, though, and modern games based on film seize to previous successful games instead of bringing something new or at least something slightly original. We saw it in Temple-Brave and we see it here in Smurfs' Epic Ice Age Village, which seems a great SEO trick but it's figurative enough to spare yourself this review.
Anyway, in case you want to know, Epic - the game, it's a city management game with a few touches of real-time strategy, which doesn't seem epic at all when we talk about a film about a fierce struggle between good and evil within a mystic forest. You have to collect resources to raise buildings and recruit troops (samurai-like leafmen) to fend off the evil boggans. You will receive quests from the Queen of the Forest to earn additional experience points and stuff. Characters and scenery are beautifully detailed, but it's a pity that a commissioned high budget game made isn't voiced over not add anything to the film's lore. Bipedal snails are awesome, by the way, and the social features (via Facebook) can improve playability span at the expense of undermining flick's canon, since your village of good must fight your friends'.
Epic's free to play, though there are ads once you reach a certain level and there are in-app purchases to sink a battleship. Fortunately, Gameloft hasn't made that mistake its competitors did at the time and there's a disclaimer for parents at the very beginning telling how to deactivate them, lest someone pigs out of berries.
